Jesus in the North

My eyes and ears have much learning to do in how to see and hear Jesus in daily life. I easily miss Him when life is full of adventure. I miss Him when the days are mundane. I believe He is there in all seasons.

Sometimes my imperceptive eyes, by His grace, get glimpses of Him.

This summer, my world expanded through getting to see the presence of Jesus in the North, and I am grateful.

He was there, blowing His grace wind into my face as we boated across the unending northern waters.

I imagine He smiled in approval at the proclamation of truth His beautiful children screamed, easily overpowering the guitar: “Oh yes, He does! A million billion people, and God loves everyone!”

He held an artistic and mathematical explanation for the phenomenon He created as we watched the green bursts of light dancing in an 11:00 sky while our finite minds tried to understand and simultaneously stay intact.

I think He was between little David and me as we tried desperately to stay upright on the tube that bounced and skidded across waves behind the boat. Perhaps He was even overcome with the same helpless laughter that leaves one’s vocal cords exhausted.

He knew the depth of the grief behind the words “my smiles are fake” written on a paper plate mask by a boy too young to already resort to pasted on smiles.

His image was seen in an uninhibited “I love you” from the mouth of an affectionate child whose eyes looked at me with all the tenderness her 7-year-old soul could hold.

His beauty manifested in a hike that had me breathless in the climb and then breathless at the view of the city of Thunder Bay from the vantage point of Mt. McKay at sunset.

I saw His grace through working with other people—people that are strong in ways that I am not while I am strong in ways that they are not—and how together we could accomplish things we wouldn’t have tried and couldn’t have done alone.

I saw His love shown through a listening ear, an open door, boundaries set, a hug, a joke, a word of affirmation, time, sacrifice, and more time given freely because the givers had been loved first.

Where have you been getting glimpses of Jesus in daily life?

  1. I so enjoyed reading this, Kerra! One of my favourite sections was the one where you talk about you and David riding on that tube. And those northern lights… absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
